Kanye West and Kim Kardashian Cover Vogue Magazine

KimYe VogueVogue

After months of speculation, Kanye West and his leading lady Kim Kardashian have landed on the cover of Vogue. Wearing what could be a preview of their wedding attire, the two are featured in the issue as the “#WorldsMostTalkedAboutCouple.”

KimYe appear on the cover of Vogue’s April issue in a spread shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz. In a behind-the-scenes video, the photoshoot takes fans into the fast life of the glamorous couple, featuring elaborate wedding gowns, tailored suits and private jets. The photos are taken both indoors and outside, seemingly inspired by Ye’s ‘Bound 2' music video.

The couple’s adorable daughter North also makes several cameos in the shoot.

Magazine covers are nothing new for West and Kardasian, but this is a particularly celebratory moment. It has been reported for quite some time that Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour was not a fan of the reality TV show darling and was thwarting her attempts at landing the coveted cover. The rapper was apparently “begging” Wintour to give his girl the cover. Looks like it paid off.

Gadgetwise: A Waterproof Cover for the Samsung Galaxy S III

Now your Samsung Galaxy S III can go swimming with your iPhone 5.

The LifeProof Nuud cases, previously available for Apple products only, are now available for the S III and the iPhone 5.

What makes the cases unusual is that they are waterproof but have no membrane covering the phone’s glass. Instead the cases have a gasket that forms a seal against the phone’s glass to keep water from seeping past the screen, which is itself waterproof.

This design makes the Nuud line among the thinnest, most rugged cases available for these phones and for the iPad as well.

While the case promises to be waterproof, snowproof, dirtproof and shockproof, the phones cannot be used underwater. (There are cases, like the one from DriSuit Technologies, that allow the phone to be used while submerged). Water on the screen can make it impossible for the phone to detect your touch.

The case requires careful assembly to seal the bead around the screen. I found it best to assemble it on a hard surface and work my way around the phone, pressing down along the edges from the top to the bottom.

At the base of the case is a hatch that opens to the charger, so you don’t have to remove the case to update the phone or top off the battery. Microphone and speaker ports are covered with a membrane that keeps water out (up to six feet down) but lets sound pass.

The Nuud is $90 for the S III and the iPhone 5.

Gadgetwise Blog: Choosing a Cover for Your Device

When it comes to cases for phones, tablets and even laptops, you basically have to decide between two classes — those that are protective and those that are stylish. Generally, the more protection you want, the less style you get.

The LifeProof iPhone case. The LifeProof iPhone case.

If you want protection from a variety of elemental threats, you may want to go with something like the cases from Lifeproof, which add scant millimeters in thickness, but in addition to offering shock protection are also waterproof to six feet. They are available for a variety of Apple devices.

If water isn’t a concern but jolts are, there are cases made from “rate-dependent materials,” which are polymers that are normally spongy but knit into an armor when whacked. G-Form demonstrates its cases and protective sleeves by dropping a sleeved tablet 100,000 feet (it worked fine), and by treating phones like hockey pucks. Tech21 makes cases of similar material for both Android and Apple phones.

A common complaint is the speed with which phones drain their batteries. If that is your burden, you can lift it with a case that combines protection and a built-in battery. The problem with many battery cases is that they turn a sleek phone into a lumpish brick. But companies like Mophie have managed to combine low-profile designs with significant battery power, as in the Mophie Juice Pack Air. This case has a 2.5-ounce battery that nearly doubles the thickness of an iPhone, but its curved back makes it feel thinner. If you need really heavy protection, there are cases from Pelican, like the i1075 HardBack for the iPad, a variation on its weapons cases for the military that have proved on occasion to be — literally — bombproof.

The Warhol Foundation has collaborated with Incase to make a sixth series of Warhol-inspired cases for Apple i-devices. The Warhol Foundation has collaborated with Incase to make a sixth series of Warhol-inspired cases for Apple i-devices.

Most people do not need that much protection for their devices; they just want to avoid scratches and add some style. The choices for this kind of protection are legion. LightWedge makes book-like covers, like the Verso Scholar, which looks like a marble cover composition book. When it comes to groovy retro, it’s hard to pass up the InCase Andy Warhol collection, which puts Warhol’s pop artwork on covers for a number of devices.

For the ultimate in personalization, companies like Case-Mate and Uncommon make covers that can be printed with one of your own photos. Just load the image online and the companies will print a scratchproof copy of your photo or design on a hardy plastic cover.

Gadgetwise Blog: A Smartphone Cover With Style but Little Substance

Samsung’s Protective Flip Cover adds little bulk to the Galaxy S III because its hard back replaces the phone’s battery cover.

Heeding the sleek design aesthetic of its Galaxy S III smartphone, Samsung has designed a streamlined cover to complement it.

The case, the Protective Flip Cover, preserves the slim form of the phone because its hard, glossy back replaces the phone’s standard battery cover. The cover adds only three millimeters of bulk to the phone, and it slides in and out of your pocket with ease.

But despite its name, the cover provides little in the way of actual protection. The front flips closed to shield the screen from smudges and scratches, but that will offer small solace if you accidentally drop the phone and it breaks. There’s no padding on the back and no cushion on the corners, so handle with care.

The real intention of the cover is to allow users to customize their device with ease. If you grow tired of the color of your Galaxy S III, just pop off the cover and snap on a new one. Covers are available in seven colors for $40 each. For the holidays, Samsung is promoting bundles of four colors for $100 apiece.

The sharp, modern look of the case does turn a lot of heads. When I showed it off in the office, several of my colleagues were impressed, some because of its sleekness and others because of its interchangeability. But as they fondled the phone, I found myself wishing it had a little extra protection.
