Missy Elliott Explains Long Absence From Music [VIDEO]

Missy Elliott released ‘Triple Threat’ and ’9th Inning’ in September 2012, but she’s remained quiet since then. There’s been no word on what’s going on with her next album, which would be her first in nine years. The rapper spoke with Yahoo!’s ‘The Yo Show’ to talk about her hiatus.

Elliott’s reasoning behind her absence revolves around inspiration. She can promote a new release to her audience just on the strength of her name. However, she’s just not going to do that.

“When I create something, it’s gotta be special and it can’t just be to throw something out there because I feel like I’m Missy,” she tells host Michael Yo. “I gotta feel like what I’m giving the fans is 100 percent and that it’s game-changing. I don’t just throw out microwave records.”

She also talks about trying to find inspiration in today’s musical climate: “Not to say that it’s bad, it’s just different now, so I’m just trying to make sure that what I give is 100 percent because I know that expectations is high from my fans and it’s high of myself.”

The Virginia native has also been fighting a private battle with Graves’ Disease during her absence. Symptoms include bulging eyes, fast heart rate, affected motor skills, hair loss and mood swings. She was diagnosed with the the disease in 2008.

The ‘Get Ur Freak On’ MC is working, however. She’s collaborating with Faith Evans — who was her roommate before becoming a platinum-selling artist — on her upcoming album ‘Incomparable.’ Elliott, 42, also says her own material is on its way. “It’s coming. I just ain’t telling nobody when,” she says.
