The wait is over. Ahead of the March 23 release date for his highly anticipated sophomore album To Pimp a Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar‘s album arrives due to an unexpected leak. The rapper seemed to signify the release by perhaps acknowledging the 20th anniversary of Tupac Shakur’s Me Against the World album. “Yesterday. March 14th. Was a Special day.,” he tweeted. “20 yrs. Later. Keep calm. All is well.” Lamar’s fans had the chance to find out if he really could outdo good kid, m.A.A.d city by buying the album on iTunes. The surprise release comes only a few days after his funkadelic track “King Kunta” leaked online. The internet has a sneaky way of getting a hold of albums before their scheduled release date so that could be why “The Blacker the Berry” rhymer and his team chose to drop the album two weeks ahead of time. But it looks like even the TDE camp had little knowledge that the project was arriving ahead of their planned debut. The CEO of Top Dawg Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith expressed his frustration with Interscope Records, Kendrick’s label, which he blames for the leak. “I WOULD LIKE 2 PERSONALLY THANK @Interscope FOR F—ING UP OUR RELEASE… SOMEBODY GOTS 2 PAY 4 THIS MISTAKE !!!! #TOP,” he wrote. From the sounds of K.Dot’s first singles, including the Grammy Award-winning “i,” the album has a conscious thread, tackling social issues from racism to sexism and poverty. Many fans and critics alike have been debating as to whether or not the Compton legend-in-the-making can achieve the same status of audio euphoria as his good kid, m.A.A.d city. According to K.Dot, his followers will not be disappointed. “There’s some stuff in there, man. It’s a roller coaster. It builds,” he recently told Rolling Stone Magazine.
