Gadgetwise Blog: A Coat With Pockets for Every Gadget

The Scottevest Tropiformer looks like a normal jacket. The Scottevest Tropiformer looks like a normal jacket.

There have been multi-pocket gadget jackets before, but have any had the carrying capacity of a clown car? The Scottevest Tropiformer looks like a normal jacket, but you can just keep pulling stuff out of it.

That is because inside the polyester shell are 22 pockets, including ones that are specifically designed for tablets, phones, glasses, pens and identification.

Many of the pockets are even marked with sewn-on icons, so you don’t errantly put a passport into the camera pocket (heaven forbid).

There is a good reason for labeling the pockets, though. The removable sleeves are held on by strong magnets – powerful enough that they come with a warning to pacemaker users. If those magnets can mess up a pacemaker, I’d hate to think when they might do to a memory card.

The phone pocket has a clear window inside the jacket, so you can open up the jacket and control the screen without having to pull it from the pocket – although if it were cold or rainy, I might prefer to take the phone out.

There are loops for retaining headphone cables, and even some pockets within pockets, like the small pouch for your SD memory cards inside the camera pocket.

The fabric of the jacket is silky, thin, and water-repellent, although the lining and multiple pockets give it the weight of a much heavier garment.

The one I tried on ran a little large, so if you are very trim, you may need to order a size down. The jackets are available in blue, light gray, dark gray, red and bright green. The dark gray and red jackets have contrasting zippers.

The Tropiformer is $150 online from Scottevest and ThinkGeek.
