Gadgetwise Blog: Q&A: Locating a Lost Google Doc

If a file gets deleted from my Google Docs page, is it possible to get it back? Does Google keep copies?

If the document in question was simply moved to the Trash within Google Docs, you can put it back in the Documents List. When you are signed into Google Docs (which has been merged into the newer Google Drive online storage service), click the Trash link on the left side of the screen. When you find the missing file in the list of discarded documents, put a check in the box next to the file name.

Click the More drop-down menu at the top of the page and choose “Restore from trash” to transfer the file from Trash back to the main Documents List. Right-clicking on the selected file name also brings up a menu with the “Restore from trash” option.

If the file has been removed from the Trash list with the “Delete forever” command on the More menu, it is pretty much gone for good. Google says it is unable to recover documents that have been permanently deleted.

If you do not see a file in your Documents List — but do not remember moving it to Trash or deleting it — try clicking on the various lists and view options on the left side of the screen (like All Items) to see if the file surfaces in a different list. Document Lists for active users can be quite long, but since this is Google, there is also a Search box nearby.

If the missing document is one that was shared with another Google Docs user, the other person may have deleted it and you may want to talk to your collaborator about that. If someone else did not delete the shared file, you may have accidently “unsubscribed” from it. If that seems to be the case, check your mail for the original message with the document-sharing invitation and try to re-subscribe to it.
