Since leaving Jeezy’s CTE World imprint, it seems that Freddie Gibbs has been busier than ever. The rapper has been rocking a ton of shows, releasing new music videos and speaking on his progression in interviews — one of the latest being with Canada’s Montreality.
In the nine-minute sit-down with the Midwest native, he talks about everything from ‘Tom & Jerry’ being his favorite cartoon to his favorite revolutionaries.
“I got Huey Newton tattooed on my back,” he explained of the civil rights activist and Black Panther co-founder who was murdered in 1989.
“I just read Assata Shakur’s book, so she probably one of my favorites right now. Her, George L. Jackson, a lot of people man. Eldridge Cleaver, Bobby Seale, Che Guevara, a lot of people. I definitely read a lot of literature on a lot of those people, so definitely well-versed on what they do, and the things, the principles that they had.”
He also touched on his upcoming album, which he’s almost done recording. “I got a new album,” he said. “It’s called ‘Lifestyles of the Insane.’ I’m coming with that probably next year or something like that. I’m working on it. I’m like 60 percent done with it.” The record arrives in 2015.
The interview shows another side to the usual tough-guy persona Gibbs displays. The MC touches on slavery’s affect on the black community and encourages young people to break the dysfunction with education.
Additionally, the 32-year-old says that carrying a gun and selling drugs doesn’t make one a man. Instead, he reveals that taking care of one’s family does, which is great advice, isn’t it?
