After weeks of talks, Google completed a deal to buy the Israeli social mapping start-up, which uses a combination of GPS tracking and contributions from its users about road conditions to help drivers navigate.

An I.B.M. computer made for the National Security Agency, delivered in 1962, shows how intelligence agencies have long been among the most demanding of customers for advanced computing, data collection and data analysis technology.
