Gadgetwise Blog: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse

The Walking Dead Zombie Hunter takes players through forests and along highways on the way to a deserted metropolis, shooting “walkers” in the head while rescuing the living.

The third season of “The Walking Dead” doesn’t start until Sunday on AMC, but right now, for eager fans, there’s the Walking Dead Zombie Hunter video game.

Part of Jakks Pacific’s Plug It In and Play TV Game line, Zombie Hunter is similar to the company’s Big Buck Hunter games, except this time, your quarry can eat you before you have a chance to shoot it.

The game’s setup is relatively simple. The controller is a plastic rifle that plugs directly into the A/V jacks of a standard TV; no console or additional software is needed. But you will need a tiny screwdriver for battery installation (a snap cover would have been much easier).

Once the batteries are in and the rifle’s sight is calibrated, you’re ready to test your survival skills in the apocalypse of the undead. The levels take you through forests and along highways on your way to a deserted metropolis, shooting “walkers” in the head while rescuing the living.

Those zombie hordes are hungry, but as long as you keep pumping the shotgun (or other weapons you pick up along the way), you can send them back to their graves before they rip you to shreds. The graphics, while bloody, are subpar compared with those of console games. Most smartphone apps have better graphics these days. But the game is fast and addictive, and the levels become more challenging as you progress.

Walking Dead Zombie Hunter is rated T for Teen and is available at retailers nationwide for $40.
