Gadgetwise Blog: This Backpack Is No Grab Bag

The iSafe Bags Urban Crew backpack is an alarming product — at least when you set it off.

The backpack contains two 125-decibel sirens powered by two 9-volt batteries and controlled by a hand grenade-style pin hidden in the shoulder strap. How loud is 125 decibels? Loud enough that it can risk ear damage. Unwisely trying it in a smallish room, I found it painfully loud.

The idea is that the pack can be used to ward off school bullies or parking lot attackers, or used by people who are injured or accidentally incapacitated.

The $90 backpack also has a flashing LED light, but it wasn’t nearly so noticeable as the sirens.

Of course, it is also a backpack. At about 19 by 12 by 7 inches, the midsize pack has four main compartments, some subdivided with internal pouches. It also has an padded sleeve inside that can fit a laptop up to 15.6 inches.

Both the contoured straps and back of the pack are covered with cushioned, breathable mesh.

The bag is largely black ripstop nylon trimmed in black, red, purple, green or pink.

I see a problem with the bag. It is that the bag works as long as your hand is on the pin ready to pull. In an unexpected attack, won’t you need both hands for defense? I’m not sure anyone would have presence of mind to pull the pin.

While the Urban Crew pack may help you scare off thieves who announce an intention to steal it, what it could really use is a proximity sensor, something like the Zomm alarm, which goes off when a protected item is moved too far from the owner. That would hinder snatch-and-grab thieves.
