Gadgetwise Blog: Q&A: Staking the Right Spot on Facebook

What’s the difference between a Facebook “Group” and a “Page?”

Facebook has some fairly strong distinctions between these two types of non-individual accounts that it offers on the site. In general, Groups are geared more for small clubs or people who just want to have a semi-private space on Facebook, while Pages are supposed to be the legitimate place to get more information about a company, celebrity or product.

A Group page can be created by anybody as a private place for members of the group to post comments and have discussions on a topic, or topics, of interest. To join a group page, another member of the group must add the new user. Group pages can be open or “closed,” which means the posts are not visible to non-members of the group.

“Pages,” on the other hand, are designed more for corporations, businesses and organizations to have an official presence on Facebook. A representative from the company or institution needs to create the Page and maintain it, and the posts, apps and other content on the page are pretty much open to the public.
