Nas Pens Open Letter After Death Of Chicago Teen

September 30th, 2009 Author: Krysten Hughes

After a violent attack that lead to the untimely demise of a Chicago teen, New York emcee, Nas [click to read], penned an open letter to youth within the community, urging the “young warriors” to stop the brutality against one another. On September 24, Derrion Albert, a sixteen year old honor roll student and faithful member of the church, was brutally beaten in what investigators called gang-related violence. Simply at the wrong place at the wrong time, Albert became victim to severe bludgeoning, beaten with planks of wood used for railroad tracks, as well as stomped on by his teenaged attackers. The Christian Fenger Academy student was pronounced dead later that evening at Advocate Christ Hospital and Medical Center. Earlier today, CNN [click here] reported that four suspects are currently being charged with first degree murder.

Bystanders who witnessed Albert being beaten recorded the grisly attack on a cell phone, and soon thereafter the video was broadcasted across the web and replayed numerous times on major television networks such as CNN and Fox. After hearing about the tragedy and viewing the wide spread and controversial video of the teen's death, Nas was prompted to voice his opinion, sharing his thoughts and words of encouragement on Globalgrind.com.

"Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong wars! Killing each other is definitely played out. Being hurt from the lost of a love one was never cool.

Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong war! I know that feeling, that frustration with life and needing to take it out on someone, any one. But....

We chose the dumbest things to go the hardest for. I remember seeing deaths over 8 ball jackets, Fila sneakers, and name plate chains. Deaths over 'he say, she say!!!!!' 'I'm from this block or I'm from that block,' or 'my moms n pops is f*cked up now the whole world gotta pay!!!'

I remember feeling like I was the hardest 'n*gga' breathing. And I couldn't wait to prove it. But let's think. What are we really proving?? And proving what to who?? Everybody knows Chicago breeds the strongest of the strong but I just feel, me, being ya brother from another state feels your pain as if I grew up with you in ya very own household.

You have the ability and mindpower to change they way we are looked at. Look who's watching us young warriors, look who's throwing us in jail constantly, look at the ignorance in the world. Look at the racist dogs who love to see us down. Loving to bury us in the ground or in jail where we continue this worthless war on one another.

Young warriors.... We are WASTING more and more time. We gotta get on our jobs and take over the world. Cuz this movie left the theaters years ago, Juice, Menace, Boys n the Hood , Blood n Blood Out, Belly!

When we see each other why do we see hatred? Why were we born in a storm, born soldiers, WARRIORS....and instead of building each other up we are at war with each other.. May the soul of this young person find peace with the almighty. I'm with you young warriors. You're me and I'm you. But trust me! you are fighting the wrong war.

This sh*t sucks!!"

Swizz Beatz' Wife Sends Letter to Alicia Keys

September 30th, 2009 Author: Andres Tardio

Swizz Beatz [click here] and Alicia Keys [click here] have been known to be an item for some time now. After seperating from his wife Mashonda, Swizz was rumored to be with Keys, a rumor he flatly denied [click here]. However, since then, he has been seen on dates with Keys. Now, Mashonda says that this relationship did not blossom after their seperation and she is reaching out to Alicia Keys, who she feels is responsible for her separation from Swizz.

Noting that she has tried to reach out to her personally, Mashonda says her attempts were met with no replies. So, she took to Rap-Up.com [click here] to send out an open letter to Alicia Keys to explain what she feels needs to be sorted out between them. According to Mashonda, this letter was triggered by a Twitter post by Keys that asked "Having a heated debate n the studio. Question is ... N love is it better to go 4 the choice that is 'SMART' or the choice that has 'SPARK??'"

Below, you can find the open letter as it was printed.

"After having a great evening with my son and enjoying some fun twit chat, I decided to sign off and get some work done. However, a few hours later I was advised that I should check @aliciakeys twit page. I've never reached out to her on twitter before. I feel our issues are a lot more serious than a website conversation. Not to mention that I've reached out to her many times in the beginning of this whole thing, as any wife would do. Unfortunately, I never succeeded in getting a response.

The 1st time I meet AK, my husband introduced us to each other at an event. ( I have no choice but to call him my husband, until he is not anymore) In the messages that I sent to her (AK), I made it very clear that on the contrary of what she might be hearing, I am still married to my husband, living with him and just had a child. Its been two years and I still have not received a response.

What I do receive, is constant displays of selfishness and disconcern to me and my son. was a fan of AK's last album, we were both signed to J Records and I always checked up on her projects. I sang her songs and admired her for creating Superwoman and Karma, I would never deny her, her talent. I believed in her until I found out she was possibly sleeping with my husband. The affair was denied by both, until it was finally admitted months later.

Already I can hear some of you saying "why are u blaming her, You cant make someone leave their wife, You cant break something thats broken." Well, my marriage was not broken, as far as I knew we were celebrating our sons birth and getting ready to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary . Call it blind love, whatever. I call it being a devoted wife.

As far as me blaming her and not blaming him, thats false. Me and my husband have worked out our differences. We are in a good place as people and as parents. I accept his choices and I am comfortable enough with myself to move on. I am so very blessed in many ways. My concern with AK is no longer the fact that she assisted in destroying a family but that she has the audacity to make these selfish comments about love and wanting to be with someone, even after knowing their situation. How is this the same Superwoman that I sang out loud with in my truck? I ask myself sometimes.

If you are reading this Alicia, let me start by saying, you know what you did. You know the role you played and you know how you contributed to the ending of my marriage. You know that I asked you to step back and let me handle my family issues. Issues that you helped to create. Im not saying everything was perfect all the time but no relationship is perfect. We made a vow to God and I believe you should have respected that, as a woman. I know you owe me or my son nothing but I just wish you would've handled things more carefully.

I'm not judging you, I put you and the whole situation in the hands of God, the Higher Power. Just know that as a woman, I expected so much more from you. I never had intentions on reaching out to you this way but after reading your twits tonight, and the constant disregard, you left me no choice. I feel that after 1 and a half years of you hiding this affair and acting like it doesnt exist, that now is the time to confront it, since you talk so openly about it now

This is not a publicity stunt, I dont have a record coming out. I just need to close this chapter in my life and that means confronting our issues. There is a small child involved. His dad loves him to death and he wants to spend more time with him but hes afraid because he knows we don't have a relationship. This is my main concern. My son NEEDS his dad and I NEED to be comfortable with you. For him!

I know many will see my point and many will not be able to look into what's real because they only want to see Alicia Keys the celebrity, not the human. This is not for the "people", this is for you. Like I said I was left no choice but to reach out to you this way. By now, Im sure you want to find a balance in this as well. I read your tweets tonight and I felt they were very insensitive. You have no idea how much pain I was caused because of this affair. Its baffling to me that you don't understand what I might have gone through with this situation. I dont consider myself a victim anymore, Ive learned alot from this! I just ask you to try and be a bit more realistic and delicate to the situation, at least until my divorce is final.

I felt me attending the party would have been a starting point for us, since you shook my hand after I offered it, but I suppose I was wrong. If its so, that you and my husband are meant to be together, then God bless you both and I hope you never have to deal with what I did. I would not wish it on my worst enemy. If you two being together forever is the case, its more of a reason for us to get along, because I'm not going anywhere. Theres a child to be raised.

To answer your tweet, choose smart over spark. Sparks burn everyone, be smart! Its simple actually, just think of the shoe being on the other foot. Stay blessed and lets work this thing out with respect and dignity."

Nas Talks About Album No-Shows, Def Jam Presidency

September 29th, 2009 Author: Edwin Ortiz

In a recent interview with punchbowlblog.com, rapper Nas (sort of) spoke on a few rumors that have been circulating concerning his name.

Amidst second-hand claims that the Queens emcee was suppose to contribute to Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 [click to read] and Raekwon’s Only Built For Cuban Linx 2 [click to read] albums, he stated, “That’s really the first I’m hearing of that.” Giving his peers props on their respective projects, Nas continued, “They have made Hip Hop serious again, and I just feel great about the whole world now because of those two albums.” However, when asked again about “Empire State of Mind” [click to listen], he responded, “What’s the next question?”

While Nas was uncooperative in answering the previous question, he did lend some insight to another rumor about being offered the Def Jam presidency, as he stated, “Yes and no.”

Clarifying his response, Nas explained, “I don’t know what’s in store in the future. I’m happy to do whatever makes sense. I would love to add on and help Hip Hop. I feel like Def Jam is a great label for Hip Hop music, but I feel like it could be doing a lot more for Hip Hop. Obviously people there have their own agendas and have their own direction, and I respect that too.”

Taking his career in its present form, he added, “At this point and time, I’m just taking it day by day. I’m not getting too caught up in that.”

Yung Berg Beat Up Again?

Author: AB

Some people just can’t get a break. Honestly, if this guy didn’t beat so much puss I might actually feel bad for him. Of course I’m talking about Hip Hop’s walking punching bag, Yung Berg. Chain snatching, beat downs, getting called out on idiotic statements, Berg’s seen it all. Starting the New Year off right, Berg has once again made the news for some fuckery. The new rumor coming out about the Yung one is typical Berg fare; he got caught slippin at a club when another rapper randomly selected him to catch a fresh beat down.

So who is the rapper this time? Well the one taking credit for it on his Myspace is Young Trump? Who…? I know so let me fill in the blanks. Trump is Master P’s nephew and an aspiring rapper (who woulda known right?) who has no prior beef with Berg at all. Apparently Trump is just trying to get his name out there and saw the opportunity to punish Berg and in turn get a few internet looks. And…it’s working.

Witnesses say Trump saw Berg walking out of Club Cabana in Hollywood when he just immediately started attacking him. This time though it was a fair one as it was just the two going at it until Trump knocked out Berg. This is when Berg’s bodyguards stepped in and got Trump off the poor yella boy and carried him away.

The image above is the one posted on Trump’s Myspace with the caption: ““yung-berg nigga we got yah!!!!!” Seriously either Berg needs to go psycho for like 6 months and just fuck up and stab like 20 rappers, or just go into the mountains with your ringtone money. This hip hop shit just don’t seem to be it for ya guy.

Asher Roth Fights Terrorists?

Author: AB

New comer Asher Roth has been making news all over the net for the past two years with his music and viral videos. For those of you who don’t know who Asher is, he was the white boy on the cover of XXL’s recent hip-hop freshman issue. He’s mostly known for peaceful funny rhymes about college life and the sorts, but some news is coming out that earlier today he was facing some serious situations.

Word is Asher was on Delta Airlines Flight 110 from Atlanta to L.A. this morning, when a man attempted a terrorist attack. According to witnesses the man jumped up and said he had a bomb. This is when Asher and several other passengers put it to the guy and quickly had him under control. FBI spokeswoman, Laura Eimiller, confirmed this incident and although she didn’t know who Asher was, she did say there were several passengers who helped out.

Wow. This is definitely some good publicity for Asher but damn, it could of come at quite a cost right? I’m just glad people are actually fighting now when someone tries some dumb shit on a plane. So terrorists beware, next time you try to attack America you might be stopped by a force greater than any government agent. Hip Hop might be aboard!

Shafiq Husayn Talks Being "En' A-Free-Ka," Sa-Ra Solo Projects

September 29th, 2009 Author: Omar Burgess

When they were first introduced to the casual Hip Hop fan, Sa-Ra Creative Partners came in with a G.O.O.D. Music EP featuring them dressed in vintage luxury gear rhyming about places as diverse as Hollywood and the fictional planet “Niggatron.” So to say the group is eclectic would be a bit of an understatement.

And since they’ve worked with artists such as Ice-T, Dr. Dre and Diddy prior to meeting each other, Shafiq Husayn, Om’Mas Keith and Taz Arnold are prone to taking breaks from their group activities to pursue solo interests. Taz is currently putting in work on both a solo album and clothing line, while Shafiq says Om’Mas is “in Puffy’s camp doing big things with MTV and ‘Making the Band’,” for Diddy’s Last Train to Paris album. In short, Sa-Ra is all over the place both musically and geographically. As such, you couldn’t exactly be blamed if you thought Shafiq’s upcoming album, Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka, was about a trip to the motherland, which he just misspelled for the hell of it.

But, when Husayn, says, “I’ve never set foot on the African continent that we know of today,” he’s not dodging the question, waxing philosophical or trying to be deep.

“America has always been known as Northwest Africa historically,” he adds. “If you Google Northwest Amexum, it’ll tell you that Northwest Amexum is the land mass above North, Central and South America. It was known at certain times as Morroch or Morocco.”

While Fela Kuti was one of many inspirations for the sound, Husayn points out that being in “A-Free-Ka,” has a spiritual connotation which is still linked to the African continent—Ancient Egypt to be exact.

“Ka means spirit in Kimetic,” Husayn says. “It’s a spiritual system, so there are no boundaries. That free ka is just free to move, so it’s a representation of man being on the planet manifest with no boundaries.”

The lack of boundaries is apparent in the sound, which continues Sa-Ra’s practice of experimenting with different drum patters or occasionally ditching the 16-bar rapped verse and chorus format. On “No Moor,” Shafiq also revisits the concept of a “Master Teacher,” from Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah album [click to read], which he produced.

“I say ‘No Moor’ because the inhabitants of the land call themselves Negroes, blacks and Hispanics and don’t realize that their nationalities are really Moorish. That identity was stripped from them during slavery, and they were given marks like Negroes, blacks, Ethiopian, Hispanics and whatnot.”

If a lesson in anthropology doesn’t sound like your ideal weekend iPod listening, don’t worry. Shafiq says that the album can be appreciated on many levels—most notably the musicianship which incorporates a multitude of live instruments and vocals.

“The subject matter is spread out enough so that if you don’t catch it on one song, you can go back later,” he explains. “People will keep running into joints, and by default they’ll run into the message.”

Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka is available for purchase October 6 via Plug Research. Stay tuned to the video section of HipHopDX for the upcoming release of Shafiq’s first video, “Lil Girl.”

Royce Da 5'9" Talks Possible Slaughterhouse/Shady Records Deal

September 29th, 2009 Author: Slava Kuperstein

Upon being featured in a cameo capacity in the "Forever" video, rumors of Slaughterhouse negotiating a deal with Eminem's Shady Records began circulating the internet. Yesterday (Sept. 28), Slaughterhouse member Royce Da 5'9" lent some credence to those rumors.

“I’ve been talking to Em and Paul [Rosenberg, Eminem's manager] for a long time,” said Royce to MTV News. “With this particular situation, things are falling into place. Everything is in place where it’s supposed to be. I’m very prepared [for] when the opportunity presented itself. It’s a time where there’s things they need over here and certain things we need in order to move over there. I think it’s a good marriage. Like I said, I just hope it can happen.”

Royce and Eminem famously collaborated on "Bad Meets Evil" on Eminem's 1999 major-label debut, the Slim Shady LP. The two formed a group together bearing the same name as the song. The two became distant during the making of Dr. Dre's 1999 album, 2001, and had a falling out in 2002 around the time 50 Cent was signed to Shady/Aftermath.

The two Detroit emcees reconciled in 2008 following a controversy involving one of Eminem's Shady Records signees, Cashis

DX News Bits: Meek Mill, G-Unit, Eve

September 29th, 2009 Author: Salima Koroma

Grand Hustle artist Meek Mill spoke to Datpiff.com on Sunday [click here] about several topics including his spot in the rap game and his affiliation with T.I. As the Philly rapper tells it, he was signed to Grand Hustle after meeting the label's owner just once.

"I let [T.I.] hear a couple joints, then [he signed me]," Mill explained. "It was just like that. I went home, Tip called me back from L.A. and was like 'Come back out here.' I went back out there and he was like, 'I'm trying to [sign you] ASAP.'

Unfortunately, during that period, Mill was going through a court case that eventually landed him in jail. He explained that by the time he got out, T.I. began his stint in jail, making it difficult for the two to collaborate on a business level. He said, however, that he is still Grand Hustle/215 Aphylliated.

"Around [the tri-state] area, if you ask somebody who their [top] rappers are, they might say Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Eminem, and Meek Mill. That's how it is around here. This ain't no gimmick. That's how they feel. Because that's what they know. But when I get the chance to advance and spread from city to city, all across the United States, I feel as though it's going to be the same way."

In other news, 50 Cent's [click to read] long-delayed "Family Day" concert took place on Saturday at PS 40 elementary school in Queens, New York [click to read]. Scheduled to have taken place last month, the event was cancelled due to concerns of parents and authorities that a lack of police enforcement would lead to violence [click to read].

The safety issue appeared to have been resolved on Saturday as more than 2,500 fans attended the concert. 50 took to stage with G-Unit members Lloyd Banks [click to read] and Tony Yayo [click to read], and performed for a reported 5 hours. The event was not largely promoted, yet the huge turnout was due primarily to word of mouth.

Members of G-Unit were not the only ones to show up onstage with 50. Papoose and Cormega also came out to show their support. The appearance of the two rappers was a surprise to those attending the concert.

Lastly, the First Lady of the Ruff Ryders has been dropped from her Geffen recording contract. After a lengthy delay in the release of Eve's fourth album Flirt [click to read], it seems as if she may have to wait even longer before she can put out the CD. As if this were not unfortunate enough, Eve has also lost her clothing line, "Fetish."

Information on both reports are limited, although they are confirmed. Eve had resurrected the clothing line twice before, but said that this time, she will leave it be. Despite the bad luck the rapper has recently had in the music and fashion worlds, her acting career is still looking quite hopeful. She makes a cameo in Drew Berrymore's newest flick "Whip It," and will have a guest spot on Fox's newest smash hit show, Glee.

Diddy Speaks On Rapper Shyne’s Release

September 28th, 2009 Author: Danielle Harling

Only days before the upcoming release of rapper Shyne [click to read] from prison, Diddy speaks to DJ Absolute regarding Shyne and his October 6 release from the Woodbourne Correctional Facility.

When asked about Shyne [click to read], Diddy seemed optimistic about his former Bad Boy artist’s release from prison.

“It's a blessing that he's coming home,” Diddy explained on New York City’s HOT97. “I spoke to him like a couple of weeks ago and he sounded like he was in good spirits. I know he can't wait to get home. I know he is definitely going to heat the whole scene up. He was definitely one of [many] talented young artists that I had the pleasure to work with. I'm quite sure he's been using his time wisely and has some heat.”

Back in 2001, Shyne [click to read] was sentenced to 10 years in prison for first degree assault following a shooting that took place at a club in New York City in 1999. Diddy, who was also at the club, was acquitted of all charges.

It is still unclear what direction Shyne will take with his recording career once he is released.

Gift of Gab Talks New Album, Electronica Music

September 28th, 2009 Author: Sean Ryon

HipHopDX recently spoke to Blackalicious and the Mighty Underdogs emcee Gift of Gab [click to read]. Five years since he released 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up [click to read], Gab has returned to the studio to record his sophomore solo album Escape 2 Mars, coming November 3 on Quannum Projects/Cornerstone RAS. Gab discussed how his latest was partly inspired by the recent concern over global warming. Yet Gab insists that the album is not an environmentally inclined polemical; rather, Escape 2 Mars captures Gab’s personal reaction to the information surrounding the issue.

“The name of the album is…Escape2 Mars, and a lot of the title song has to do with global warming,” explained the writer of "Alphabet Aerobics." “There’s all of the talk about the Mayan calendar and 2012, so I’ve been reading about it a little bit. Like I’ve said, I’m not trying to say that I’m in a position to preach or say what it is or isn’t, it’s just interesting information. A lot of it was inspired by that.”

While the environment is not the most talked about topics in Hip Hop, Gab feels that it is not an issue which rappers intentionally avoid. The Blackalicious front-man says that global warming has yet to manifest itself to the extent where it will significantly affect people.

“I wouldn’t say [there’s] a stigma [to talking about the environment],” he said. “I wouldn’t say people are consciously choosing not to talk about it…who knows what this whole global warming thing is. Escape [2 Mars] was actually inspired by a lot of information that I’ve been given about global warming. I just felt like ‘Well damn, this is some great shit that affects all of us,’ and at that time when I wrote the song… so I just expressed what was on my mind. I don’t think people are consciously not talking about it, I just think that it’s not bad enough yet for people to see it directly affecting them.”

Escape 2 Mars also boasts the song “Dreamin.’” The record finds Gab sharing the mic with fellow Californian emcee Del The Funkee Homosapien [click to read] and Rhymesayers heavyweight Brother Ali [click to read]. Gab explained how the first seeds of the collaboration were sewn out of a mutual artistic respect.

“I appreciate both [Del The Funkee Homosapien and Brother Ali] as artists and they’re two people I’ve wanted to work with as artists,” said Gab. “When I was writing the song, it just felt like the type of a song that I would like to have guests on…I heard and I was like ‘Del would sound dope on this,’ and I had been talking to Brother Ali about some other stuff, and I was like ‘Well damn, let me just give him a call and see if he’d be dope on this, too,’ and they both wrecked it.”

Escape 2 Mars also finds Gab experimenting with a greater musical palette. In a departure from the heavy bass grooves and soulful sampling of 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up, some of the production on Escape 2 Mars will have an electronica-inspired sound. Gab says that after touring with electronica artist Bassnectar first turned him on to this new sound and helped him further realize how the schism between different musical genres has diminished over time.

“There are definitely songs on the album that have more of an electronic feel,” he explained. “A few months ago, I went on the road with Bassnectar. I had never really been into…the electronic music scene and that whole genre…I don’t think I got it at first. But when I on these tours with Bassnectar, I noticed that a lot of the people that were in the audience were Quannum [Projects] fans [and] were gift of Gab fans…I started to really peep that, like ‘Wow, this is kind of like the new Hip Hop,’ not in that it sounds like Hip Hop, but it this whole thing is underground. It hasn’t been commercialized yet. It hasn’t blown up to that proportion yet. It’s just a huge sub-culture…and I began to listen to more of the music and feel…the styles that would fit with what I could do with [my lyrics]. As a rapper, I want to always stay unpredictable.”

He later added, “I definitely see more people that would’ve just listened to [one type of music] back in the day listening to Hip Hop or other types of music. I definitely know that people who would listen to just Hip Hop and Soul back in the day are interested in listening to Rock music. I myself had to grow and be open because there was a point where I would only listen to a certain kind of music and I wouldn’t listen to other kinds of music because I felt like other kinds of music were for other cultures to relate to…as I got older and I started to really get up on more rock and more of these great records, it became apparent that wow, music is music and if you limit yourself, especially if you’re an artist…you might miss out on some brilliant pieces of work.“

Afro Classics Set To Release New Album

September 27th, 2009 Author: Krysten Hughes

Breaking onto the scene nearly eight years ago with their self-titled album release, Scarub of the west coast Hip Hop crew Living Legends [click to read] has teamed up with Los Angeles native, Very (US Pros), for another collaborative album under the moniker Afro Classics. Aside from the decision to drop the question mark at the end of their name, the duo continues to execute original sounds and fresh Hip Hop rhymes with Classic Rock.

After the success of their first collaborative project, Afro Classics?, in 2001, the duo traveled overseas with two tours in Japan, and more recently performed alongside Grouch (Living Legends) and Eligh, as well as Exile [click to read] and DJ Edit (Glitch Mob) this spring for the Say G&E Tour. Independently, Scarub and Very also put out a digital EP titled The Classics, which dropped in March on Legendary Music.

Set to feature production from Scarub, Living Legends crew member Eligh, as well as DJ Fat Jack and west coast producer and emcee Style Misia, Classic Rock is anticipated to be another satisfying album to add to the Afro Classics collective.

Classic Rock is slated to drop October 6 via NatAural High Records.

Common, Kanye West, Nas Perform For A Good Cause

September 27th, 2009 Author: Andres Tardio

Common's Common Ground Foundation's [click here] benefit concert took place at the Hollywood Palladium last night (September 26), an evening full of stars that were there for a good cause. HipHopDX was at the event, one which saw the impressive roster of performers and special guests, including the surprise arrival of one of this year's most talked about rappers.

De La Soul kicked things off with classic cuts before bringing MF Doom [click here] along as a guest. The Roots followed with a couple of songs including "The Next Movement," while Black Thought stayed to perform a few impromptu freestyles with Common [click here], who acted as host and performer all night.

Ludacris' [click here] set was full of the enthusiasm he has become known for as he let the crowd pick songs from his discography including "Southern Hospitality" and "Move Bitch." Ending his set with "I Do It For Hip Hop," Nas joined him to spit his verse. After "I Do it for Hip Hop," he stayed to perform solo, starting with "One Mic." Common later joined Nasir at the tail end of his set to help with tracks off Illmatic, which they performed together, an unexpected moment met with thunderous applause as they spit "N.Y. State of Mind" together. Another surprise followed as Nas introduced Heavy D, who thanked the fans for welcoming him as he performed a few of hits including "Nuttin But Love" and "Now That We Found Love," dancing like he never lost a step.

Fans went wild as Mos Def entered the stage to begin "Respiration," and after having to start the track over, Talib Kweli [click here] joined Com and Mos for the rest of the cut. Black Star was not originally supposed to perform, as Common later announced, but the surprise was met with praise from fans as Mos sang "Umi Says" and Kweli stormed through "Get By." After Black Star, Common announced the most surprising performance of the night.

At first Com told fans that Kanye West was supposed to be a special guest for the evening. However he said he could not make it due to the backlash he's received from his VMA interruption of Taylor Swift [click here], adding that Ye sent his love. A few second later, Kanye emerged from the back telling fans to "Get Em High," greeted by the loudest welcome of the night. Members of the audience jumped and shouted in surprise and awe as West performed his verses off "Make Her Say" and "Run This Town," with Common, Mos Def and Talib Kweli backing him up. By the time he got to "Good Life" and "Flashing Lights," Queen Latifah [click here] took the stage to share in the moment.

When Queen Latifah [click here] began her set, West stayed to support her along with Mos, Common and Kweli. Latifah ended the evening's event with a few songs from her catalog including "U.N.I.T.Y." and "People." At one point, she embraced Kanye West and Talib Kweli who sang along to her hits, acting as hype men for the set. As the entire crew exchanged hand daps and hugs, it was the clear that the show was wrapping up.

To close the curtains, Common reintroduced Jodie Blum of the Common Ground Foundation and presented her with a gift, saying the event was largely put together as a result of her hard work. With that, Common and Friends said good night to all who were in attendance, marking the end of Common's 2nd Annual benefit show for his foundation. Review: Evil Empire, DJ Lust & DJ Diggz - Purple Krushed Kush

By Big Chew on September 26, 2009 5:44 PM

I'll take some Purple Kush over these generic ass pause tapes all day every day. Give me some sort of feeling with the music and put some timing to it. Is that too much to ask? I don't think so and when it comes to block hugging music, that soft white and hard yellow music few do it better than Lust, Diggz and Evil Empire.

Ransom can do no wrong in my mind. I mean you can say Joe Budden this and Joe Budden that but when I listen to an MC I want shit to be as believable as possible and Joe is Styrofoam made...sorry. Ransom on "Mighty Healthy" makes it sound easy, some quick mixtape shit to get ya veins throbbing for more dope. Same with "Uncut"...that's an honest ass track. Dead ass, I never really heard French Montana, not my wave I guess, he getting his weight up in the game, can't front on that. The joint with Max B was ok besides that corny ass hook. "Take Me To NY" stayed on rewind today. It's the perfect soundtrack to a sunny fall day. I don't like 50 Cent on "Dreaming", Dre on the beat or not. I'm checking for Lloyd Banks tho. Take your pick "Green Thumb", "Living Like A King" or "Bandana" with Maino. Each track will give ya ears the flu. Ron Paul getting his shine on with "One For The Money". They rocking more and more south joints on here now. Not sure how I feel about that with my east coast bias and all. Hahaha. I tried to pick a south joint I dug but I couldn't, lol. That "Swag Flu" made me want to kick myself in the nuts. I can't believe there's masses of people who listen to that bullshit. That Beanie Sigel freestyles was much needed. Something I can nod my head to at least. As usual the hardest track up on here involves Un Pacino and Hardwhite. "Cath You Slippin" is that go getta anthem. You def can't go wrong with Snub Hollow & Big K.R.I.T on that "Krushed Kush" track. I mean besides the Ran I bumped this the most.

The first half of the mixtape I was like damn, cats pushing classic or damn near it but that last half lost me a lil. I def don't hate the south in the least but those tracks don't cut if for this old timer. My age is most def showing these days. Regardless of that tho, DJ Lust on a mixtape is like milk on cereal...the shit just works.

Industry Entertainers Help Launch National Education Initiative

September 26th, 2009 Author: Krysten Hughes

In partnership with community leaders, celebrities and entertainment industry supporters, Los Angeles based non-profit organization, Operation Hope, is set to launch 5 Million Kids, a national initiative focusing its efforts on redefining the perceptions and attitudes towards education.

Legendary icon and music extraordinaire Quincy Jones [click to read], alongside global spokesperson for Operation Hope, Andrew Young, both serve as national co-chairs. “It takes 20 years to change a culture,” said Jones in an Operation Hope press release. “We’ve spent the last 20 years making dumb sexy,” he continued.

Recently, the Los Angeles Times [click here] reported that the dropout rate in the Los Angeles Unified School District for the 2007-2008 school year was 26.4%, a decrease from 31.7% the previous year, and overall among one the largest improvements in California. However, the steep drop out rates reported within the Los Angeles school system continues to be an alarming reality for public schools across the nation.

Over the next five years, some of the goals for the 5 Million Kids initiative include teaching students, parents and teachers about finances through a variety of workshops, increasing leadership and participation in urban communities at the grassroots level up to influential industry supporters, as well as securing at least $50 million in Earned Income Tax Credits for parents and teachers.

Kicking off September 29, the launch event will include Jones and his son Quincy "QD3" Jones [click to read], in addition to R&B singer and actor Tyrese [click to read], Day 26 [click to read] from P. Diddy’s Making the Band, as well as members of the Association of Independent Music Publishers. The event is set to take place at an undisclosed South Central Los Angeles Middle School, and attendees must RSVP to obtain the address.

James Cruz Talks Marketing & Advertising, SRC Success

September 25th, 2009 Author: Jake Paine

As President of SRC Marketing Group, James Cruz [click to read] has had a very good year. From a heavy hand in the marketing and branding in the careers of Asher Roth [click to read] and Akon [click to read], Cruz will also be assisting Diddy in his Last Train To Paris campaign. In a conversation with HipHopDX this week, Cruz dismissed notions of a financial drought in the Hip Hop sector.

"From my perspective I firmly believe that this is a great time of opportunity. People are still trying to figure out how the Internet is going to affect our overall, day-to-day growth. What I see is people reinvesting in themselves," noted Cruz enthusiastically from his SRC offices. "I believe in hiring and working with stars, because stars tend to find their own way. And I firmly believe when you see the successes of what Jay-Z has been able to do, what Puffy is doing, Kid Cudi [click to read] and Asher Roth. I think the age demographic is changing. I think the lines between urban and mainstream have been blurred for a long time. But I believe that as society changes and as Hip Hop hits its thirties that we’re changing and we’re maturing and we’re growing and I think that’s good for everybody."

With that said, the veteran manager for the likes of 50 Cent and Missy Elliott professes change in the formulas. "I firmly believe that a lot of the labels have to again change the way that they’re going about doing business and how they’re spending monies." While the viral culture pushes quanity, Cruz insists that quality translates to lasting power. "Things have become a lot cheaper to create, but then some things have lost their texture and their artistry. You know people are doing videos for no money, you know but then you look at, you know if you look at the nominees for MTV [VMAs] and the people that have won, they’ve invested in their look and in their attitude and in their styling in their presence."

Through the success that Cruz achieved in carrying Akon to his latest gold plaque and Roth to six-figure rookie sales, he has reunited with a Rap superstar at another level. "We’re helping launch Diddy’s album, The Last Train to Paris, which is a constant connection to me and Puff for years. He gave me the best advice of my career about [going to] learn management, now I thought he meant literally management of an artist, but he meant management in every way whether it be brands, artists, messaging, management of myself. So that was probably the best advice of my career that I ever got or ever will get, in my opinion, and you know bringing that back to full." Cruz noted that just as artists are collaborating to better their brands, labels should also consider working together for the best strategies possible.

In the Twitter era where aspiring industry tag-alongs are creating start-up's, Cruz values his experience. "There’s strength in marketing, there’s strength at radio, there’s strength on the Internet, there’s strength in terms of team work and chemistry, there’s history, there’s experience and there’s knowing how to win. Why do you trade for a veteran player, 'cause he knows how to win, so him knowing how to win it helps the younger players realize and learn how to win you know and I believe that’s what the record label has a lot of its strengths from – drive."

As a marketing guru, Cruz was asked about the value of Hip Hop advertising, a trend that proved fruitful for Jadakiss' The Last Kiss, despite increasing belief that it's futile. "I’m gonna say two words, two brands and I'ma say it in the liquor space, Ciroc and Nuvo. Nuvo owns so many different videos, so much placement in videos. If you watch, if you go online right now and click on AOL Videos and watch whats going on, you see Nuvo from 50 Cent to T-Pain to Akon, you name it, there you’re gonna see a Nuvo bottle show up in the video. That’s alternative advertising at its best."

Cruz encouraged all Rap artists to remember the value in advertising-based campaigns, adapted to the digital era. "I’m a firm believer that advertising is still important, it’s the advertising medium that’s how you go about marketing it that advertises a product that’s different. Now whether that be a radio giveaway campaign or Internet website or customization campaign or an outdoor ad what works for the brand, but it has to connect the dots, it all has to fit."

"106 & Park is a great show and people watch it for the performances and stuff, but realistically when you wanna watch a video you go online, pop, and it plays right away. But 106 & Park and BET is a brand because of their interviews," added Cruz about how proven programming is still essential to artistic success. Pointing to Terrence J and Rocsi, as well as Angie Martinez on radio, the former Violator exec stressed the importance of worthwhile outlets. "So you know that’s another medium that we’re talking about that’s been exceptional from an advertising standpoint because you’re advertising yourself. Artists have start thinking of themselves as brands and when they, not ever artist is a brand so an artist knows that every medium and every interview and every video and every tour date is an opportunity to sell your brand and what you believe in."

James Cruz is presently at work on Diddy's Last Train To Paris.

Jay-Z Speaks To Oprah

September 25th, 2009 Author: Andres Tardio

In an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey [click to view], Jay-Z spoke on the rise "from Brooklyn to the boardroom." The interview was similar to a previous interview the two had for O Magazine [click to read]. In the televised version, which aired yesterday, Jigga Man was open about a variety of topics.

During the interview, Oprah claimed their long conversation gave her many "Ah-ha" moments, especially when speaking on racism, which Jay said was a contributing factor in lessening the prominance of racism in America.

"If you go to a club, there's no white or black club. The music is the thing that brings everyone together. They're enjoying the same type of music," he said, before adding more to it. "It's difficult to teach racism because racism is taught in the home. So, it's difficult to teach that when someone idolizes a Jay-Z or a Kanye West. It's difficult to say that that person is less than you or different from you when you can relate to their music or their struggle or you're a fan of their music."

Later in the interview, while walking through Marcy with Oprah beside him, he gave insight on his drug dealing past.

"You don't want to deal drugs or bring trouble to your mother's doorstep but it's pretty much everywhere."

In the interview, much like in the magazine, Jay also shared his feelings on his father, a man who left the home while Jay was young.

"We were told our parents would separate, but the reasons weren't explained. My mom prepared us more than he did. I don't think he was ready for that level of discussion and emotion. He was a guy who was pretty detached from his feelings," he said in the magazine. "It made me not express my feelings as much. I was already a shy kid, and it made me a little reclusive. But it also made me independent. And stronger. It was a weird juxtaposition."

As we reported earlier today [click here], Jay-Z is now gearing up for a tour. He will be heading out to cities across the United States with Wale [click here], N.E.R.D. [click here] and his latest protoge J. Cole

Why Michael Jackson Was killed

Gregory says he asked Jackson when the last time he ate was, because he didn't look well, and that Jackson told him -- quote -- "They're trying to poison me." He asked him when he last drank water, and he said Jackson told him again -- quote -- "They're trying to kill me." -

TOYA JACKSON: "Michael Was Murdered"

One week after Los Angeles police confirmed that investigators had not ruled out homicide in the death of Michael Jackson, the late singer's older sister, La Toya Jackson, reveals that she suspects he was murdered, the U.K.'s Mail On Sunday reports.

"I believe Michael was murdered," she said. "I felt that from the start. Not just one person was involved, rather it was a conspiracy of people. He was surrounded by a bad circle. Michael was a very meek, quiet, loving person. People took advantage of that. People fought to be close to him, people who werent always on his side."

Some artists are Anti-New World Order as well, such as Tupac, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson, some are just puppets, a tool for brainwashing and manipulating people. Illuminati self-expose themselves to a certain extent, because they believe it gives them power. This is also why Washington DC's design is full of Satanic symbols. Michael Jackson was murdered because he was going to expose a "conspiracy". There is a video of him saying this, search for it.

Wale Performs Kanye West Tribute At Hip Hop Honors

September 26th, 2009 Author: Salima Koroma

During Vh1's Hip Hop Honors Awards show taping on Wednesday in Brookly, New York [click to read], Wale, who last appeared as part of the house band [click to read] for MTV's Music Video Awards, gave tribute to Kanye West for his contributions to music. The sixth annual Hip Hop Honors show will also salute the Beastie Boys with a tribute and will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Def Jam Records.

Although Wale's dedication to 'Ye will undoubtedly be a highlight of the night, Vh1 did not mention the performance in the post-show press release. While the release mentioned Eminem, The Roots, and DJ Jazzy Jeff's tribute to LL Cool J, Mary J. Blige and Method Man's performance of "I'll Be There For You/You're All I Need To Get By," and Ja Rule and Ashanti's reunion onstage, it did not make note of the Kanye West tribute. Whether the performance was supposed to be a surprise, or if 'Ye's bad press as of late [click to read] is a factor in VH1's keeping mum, can only be speculated.

In any case, Wale seemed excited about the performance and took to his Twitter page to let fans know about it: "just did the dopest kanye impersonation...fully equipt drake x kanye arm thingy...lol props to def jam and mr. west!"

Rick Ross, Ludacris, KRS-One, Ghostface Killah, Fabolous, Eve, Gym Class Heroes, DMX, and many, many others showed up to perform at the awards show. Vh1's Hip Hop Honors will air on Oct. 13.

Review: Hevehitta & DJ Unexpected - Wu Tang Clan: Executioners From Shaolin

By Big Chew on September 24, 2009 11:42 PM

I love these types of mixtapes. You have to listen to them 6-7 times before you really "hear" everything they have to offer. It's more than the music, it's how the DJ(s) hear the music. You rely on the DJ to have an ear, an ear for that shit you like but how only they can put it together.

Very first listen I didn't like the "Bring The Ruckus" demo mix or the "I Get Down For My Crown". I was all amped up to hear something new and these are far from new or a blend or remix ect. After some listens tho, I understand the need for these and appreciate them even more. Listen to "Bring The Ruckus" then a joint like "House of Flying Daggers". The growth as MCs is crazy. Very few MCs give a fuck about the craft itself but Wu shows and proves.

If you cop'd this mixtape you obviously know your Wu so no need to go track for track with a ton of highlights. It's really about the mix, the flow and how the mixtape was put together.

Hev & Un give you the Wu foundation as the jump off and then follow it up with a breakdown of a particular member of the group. That breakdown set up comes in the form of old Kung Fu clips followed by the featured MCs most potent bars and an Unexpected remix here and there.

Not all Wu members get their solo shine tho. I would imagine that's gonna be on part 2 or maybe even part 3...the Wu catalog is that deep. If I had to pick one members section tho it would be Ghostface Killah as "The Snake". You get two remixes from both Un and Hev respectively then "Kilos" and "Daytona 500". "Kilos" is my shit, can knock that joint all day.

This is a calculated project and I fuck with that. I like to have to think a lil bit with my mixtapes. If I wanted some mindless shit I would listen to a Trap-A-Holics mixtape on Dat Piff with my thumb in my ass. Regardless the project has those rare jewels that you might have even heard before but you haven't heard them in the context of the rest of the mix and that's what makes it a near classic. I say near cause with all the work the Wu put in you need a part two (or part 3) and when you combine them all they form like Vol-tron and you get your classic.

Cole [click here].

Eminem's Music Publisher Sues Apple & Aftermath

September 24th, 2009 Author: Salima Koroma

According to Billboard, Eminem's music publisher, Eight Mile Style is planning to sue both Apple and Aftermath Records for the unauthorized distribution of 93 of Em's songs in downloadable formats via iTunes. The case, which was filed back in 2004, will go to trial on Thursday in Detroit if a settlement is not reached by Wednesday.

Eight Mile claims that Apple illegally made over $2.5 million from Eminem iTunes downloads, a bulk of which came from the 2002 smash single "Lose Yourself," off of the "8 Mile" movie soundtrack. Not only does the publishing company demand money for the loss in royalties, they are also asking for a share in profits of Apple's iPod sales.

In addition, Eight Mile Style alleges that Aftermath collected $4 million from Eminem's music sales in partnership with Apple. Although Aftermath and Apple refute the accusations, showing court documents that suggest Aftermath owns the exclusive rights to Eminem's master compositions, the publishing company believes it actually owns the rights to Em's music.

This is not the first time Aftermath and Apple have had to go to court over licensing disputes. In 2007, Em's producers, FTB Productions also filed suit against Aftermath for licensing Em's music to Apple's iTunes.

If the trial is taken to court, Eminem may act as a witness.

Ransom - Hell On Earth Video (Brand NEW)

Track Review: Ransom - All By Design

By Big Chew on September 23, 2009 10:43 PM

New Ransom music is damn near like Christmas day over on the mullet. One of the best MCs to hug the block...period. He got some jewels in this one..."I don't even spit no more, I throw up". Hahaha. I fuck with this track, it's pretty stripped down and raw which is the only way to consume hip hop these days. You other MCs can save your corporate rap for the Slaughter House. (lol)
